Many years ago, my husband and I hosted a Bible study at our home. There were a couple members experiencing anxiety. One day, I received a call from one member who asked if I would accompany them to the Emergency Room. They were having severe anxiety! I said yes and we went to the ER.
While there, this person was connected to a monitor for heart and blood pressure. I was sitting nearby and noticed the monitor start to speed up and go higher. I said let me pray for you. We prayed. Immediately, it began to settle back down. As we sat there, it started to increase again. Again, we prayed. The monitor responded again and the numbers settled back down. I truly had no experience with what is called anxiety or panic attacks. This was my first introduction to it.
However, I know that whatever the problem, prayer is always the correct response! I am also reminded that God's word is an equally powerful resource in times of trouble. 2 Timothy 1:7 tells us, "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind." His Word is our sword against the enemy!
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with
thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which
surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
